The Calgary Stampede
On the western plains of 19th century North America, soulful Celtic melodies drifted through the evening air at many a cowboy campfire and during lonely shifts at night guard. These songs were brought over from Ireland and the words were often changed to suit the new occupations.
The Celtic origins of cowboy music are well documented. Traditional Irish folk music, especially fiddle, served as the foundation and model for countless cowboy classics. Celtic Cowboy melts the rolling hills of Ireland into the dusty trails of North America and it is with great anticipation that we welcome you here for The Calgary Stampede.
Check out our Celtic cowboy friendly menu and indulge in such greats as our
Chuck Wagon Burgers and
Country Kickin Stews.
The James Joyce Irish Pub also features live music from Fraid Knot,
Western Canada’s hardest working ambassadors of contemporary Celtic music. Influenced by the sounds of the musical pioneers who’ve journeyed down this path before, the band’s distinctive east coast flavoured sound is largely defined by lead front-man Byron Eddy. Calmer than the Drop Kick Murphy’s, edgier than Great Big Sea, happier than the Pogues and still traditional enough to please the ear of many a purist, Fraid Knot truly bridges the gap between Celtic and Rock!
