St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day

To the Irish everywhere, St. Patrick’s day is a time of national celebration - like a second Christmas - a time for remembering the Patron Saint of Ireland and enjoying themselves to the full.

For others, St. Patrick’s Day is a great opportunity to share in an Irish Party; a chance to experience Ireland’s drinks, music and customs.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years.

St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland, is credited with converting the Irish to Christianity in the middle of the fifth century AD. He is also closely associated with two popular legends.

The first was his use of the three-leafed shamrock plant- now the symbol of Ireland - to illustrate the idea of the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. The second is that he is said to have driven all the snakes in Ireland into the sea. (Even today, there are no snakes in the country.)
